Can Diabetics Get Life Insurance? Yes, Here’s How

If you are living with diabetes, you may wonder whether life insurance is even an option. Many people assume that a diabetes diagnosis automatically disqualifies them or leads to unaffordable premiums. The reality is far more encouraging. Thousands of diabetics secure life insurance every year, often at reasonable rates, by choosing the right policy and working with insurers that understand modern diabetes management. The key is knowing which factors matter most to underwriters and how to present your health in the best possible light. In our guide on best life insurance for diabetics, we explain how top companies evaluate applicants and what you can do to improve your chances.

Why Diabetes Affects Life Insurance Rates

Insurers base premiums on risk. Diabetes, especially when poorly controlled, is linked to complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and neuropathy. These potential health events increase the likelihood that an insurer will have to pay a claim earlier than expected. As a result, standard underwriting for diabetics often involves higher premiums or more restrictive policy terms compared to someone without chronic conditions.

However, the insurance industry has evolved. Many carriers now use nuanced underwriting that rewards good diabetes management. If you maintain stable blood sugar levels, have no serious complications, and follow a healthy lifestyle, you may qualify for rates that are only slightly higher than standard or even standard in some cases. The earlier you apply and the better your medical records reflect control, the more options you will have.

Types of Life Insurance for Diabetics

Not all life insurance policies are created equal when you have diabetes. Understanding the main types helps you choose the one that balances cost and coverage most effectively.

Term Life Insurance

Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period, typically 10 to 30 years. It is the most affordable option for diabetics because the insurer only carries risk for a limited time. If your diabetes is well-controlled, many top carriers will offer standard or near-standard premiums on term policies. This type is ideal for covering temporary needs like a mortgage, children’s education, or income replacement during working years.

Whole Life Insurance

Whole life insurance offers lifetime coverage with a cash value component. Premiums are higher because the policy never expires and builds savings. Diabetics may find whole life more expensive, but it can be a good option if you want permanent coverage or have difficulty qualifying for term due to complications. Some companies offer simplified issue or guaranteed issue whole life policies that do not require a medical exam, though these come with lower face amounts and higher costs.

Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance

This is a last-resort product for diabetics with severe complications or very poor control. It requires no medical exam and accepts all applicants regardless of health. However, premiums are high, coverage limits are low (often $25,000 or less), and there is usually a two-year waiting period before full benefits are paid. Use guaranteed issue only if you cannot qualify for any other type.

How Insurers Evaluate Diabetic Applicants

When you apply for life insurance with diabetes, insurers focus on several key metrics. Understanding these can help you prepare and improve your odds of approval.

• HbA1c levels: This blood test shows your average blood sugar control over the past two to three months. A reading below 7.0 is ideal; readings between 7.0 and 8.0 are often acceptable but may lead to higher rates. Readings above 8.0 or 9.0 usually result in declines.
• Age at diagnosis: Diagnosis at a younger age (especially before age 30) may indicate Type 1 diabetes, which is considered higher risk because it requires lifelong insulin. Type 2 diagnosed later in life generally has a more favorable outlook.
• Complications: Insurers look for evidence of neuropathy, retinopathy, kidney disease, or cardiovascular issues. Any history of these conditions will significantly affect your rating.
• Medication regimen: Using insulin alone versus oral medications or diet control can influence underwriting. Non-insulin users often receive better rates.
• Lifestyle factors: Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol compound the risk. Managing these separately improves your overall profile.

Insurers will typically ask for an attending physician statement (APS) and may also request a blood and urine test as part of the underwriting process. Being transparent and providing complete medical records helps avoid delays and surprises.

Tips for Getting Affordable Coverage

Even with diabetes, you can take steps to lower your life insurance premiums. The following strategies are proven to help many diabetics secure better rates.

First, optimize your diabetes management. Work with your doctor to keep your HbA1c below 7.0 or as close to that target as possible. Consistent monitoring, medication adherence, and a healthy diet all contribute. Many insurers now offer preferred rates for diabetics who maintain excellent control over several consecutive years.

Second, compare quotes from multiple insurers. Underwriting guidelines vary widely. One company may classify a well-controlled Type 2 diabetic as standard, while another may apply a table rating. Shopping around can make a significant difference in premium cost. If you are self-employed, you might also explore options in our guide on life insurance for self employed, as some carriers offer flexible policies suited to independent workers.

Third, apply while you are younger and healthier. The earlier you lock in coverage, the lower your rates will be over the long term. As noted in our article on why young adults need life insurance, starting in your 20s or 30s can save you thousands of dollars in premiums even with a chronic condition.

Fourth, consider a graded benefit or simplified issue policy if you have complications. These policies do not require a full medical exam and are easier to qualify for, though they may have a two-year waiting period. Use them as a bridge until you can improve your health and later convert to a standard policy.

Fifth, work with an independent agent who specializes in high-risk life insurance. An experienced agent can match you with carriers that have favorable underwriting for diabetics and help you avoid unnecessary rejections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get life insurance with Type 1 diabetes?

Yes, many insurers offer life insurance for Type 1 diabetics, though rates are typically higher than for Type 2. Carriers focus on your HbA1c levels, absence of complications, and overall health. Some top companies now have dedicated programs for Type 1 with competitive premiums.

Will I have to take a medical exam?

Most traditional term and whole life policies require a medical exam, including blood and urine tests. However, simplified issue policies are available that ask health questions but do not require an exam. Guaranteed issue policies have no exam or health questions but have higher costs and lower coverage amounts.

How long does it take to get approved?

Approval can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. The timeline depends on the insurer, the complexity of your medical history, and how quickly your doctor provides records. Working with an agent can speed up the process.

What if I have diabetic complications?

Complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, or kidney disease make it harder to qualify for standard policies. You may still be eligible for graded benefit or guaranteed issue policies. Focus on improving your health and managing complications to potentially requalify later.

Can I lower my premiums after I get the policy?

Some policies allow you to reapply for a lower rate if your health improves significantly. This is called a re-entry or rate reduction option. Check with your carrier to see if this is available. Otherwise, you can always shop for a new policy and cancel the old one if you find better rates.

Navigating life insurance with diabetes requires patience and the right strategy. The most important step is to start early, gather your medical records, and compare multiple quotes.
